Physician Innovator (PI) is a member-driven organization with global and country based chapters.

We strive to be the primary go-to community for physician innovators and entrepreneurs (in training, practice, or retired), and act as a key stakeholder in national and local healthcare innovation ecosystems. Our mission is to:

Empower physicians at any stage of their career with entrepreneurship and innovation knowledge, resources and connections in order to turn ideas into ventures that make meaningful and ethical impact for healthcare.

    Board Chair

    Physician leader and tech entrepreneur, with a 15+ years track record of successful complex $100m+ healthcare innovation projects. CEO of Careteam Technologies with particular expertise in starting up new projects and bringing them to scale.

    Co-founder, Secretary/Treasurer

    Physician innovator passionate in how technology fits in quality improvement. Residency director of Medical Biochemistry at UBC Medicine, and board member at Doctors of BC.

    Co-Founder, President

    Wanted to give physician innovators and entrepreneurs a community, resources, and a voice. UBC medical student, researching medical AI at Stanford/Google, and a medical consultant at GYANT - a tech startup in San Francisco.

  • Mohammad Asadi-Lari

    Co-Founder, In-Memoriam

    Mohammad was an inspiring innovator and leader, a rising MD-PHD student in the faculty of Medicine at the university of Toronto, and deeply committed to creating forward thinking to complex healthcare problems. He was accomplished and recognized by multiple organizations, including 3M, Governor General bronze academic medal, a University of British Columbia Faces of Today Leadership award, a Society for Scolarly Publishing Fellowship, and many more. Mohammad touched our lives in many ways, and his influence continues to influence physician innovation today.

  • David Gao

    Co-Founder, Steering Committee

    Medical student at the University of Ottawa with passion for the intersection of healthcare and technology - specifically ML/AI, digital health tools, and blockchain applications. Worked in software development and is always looking for ways to apply his technical background to improve healthcare. He believes it is crucial to bring more awareness about innovation and entrepreneurship in medicine and is what inspired him to join Physician Innovator!

  • Harshil Shah

    Executive, Steering Committee

    Second-year medical student at the University of Calgary with a background in neurosciences. He has experience in entrepreneurship, marketing, and scaling student organizations. He is determined to bring innovation, initiative, and entrepreneurship in medicine to make a positive impact on efficiency and patient care. He serves on the Steering Committee and provides technical digital skills, marketing advice, and initiative to drive progress.

    First-year medical student at the University of British Columbia with a background in finance from the Sauder School of Business. Passionate about integrating rapidly advancing technologies such as artificial intelligence into practical healthcare settings. Through involvement with Physician Innovators, they seek to collaborate with like-minded professionals, aiming to drive the application of innovative solutions that improve patient care and healthcare delivery efficiency.

With her previous experience in running research programs and symposiums, Mansi hopes to create new events that better connect the Canadian community of physician and medical learner innovators.

    I'm a third-year medical student studying at Schulich School of Medicine in London! I have worked for a medical software company developing artificial intelligence solutions for the medical space designed to provide clinically validated patient and clinician support while enhancing healthcare accessibility. In my spare time I love to run, swim, and bike!

    Medical student at the University of Ottawa and is extremely passionate about finding novel ways to improve medical education through the integration of new research in the field of AI and digital health. Having experience in research in the field of AI and surgical advancements, he believes that disseminating valuable information to the medical community is vital for the betterment of an efficient healthcare system.

  • Jaymie Varenbut

    University of Toronto

    Jaymie is a recent graduate from the Institute for Management and Innovation at the University of Toronto, where she completed her Masters in Management of Innovation (MMI). Previously she received an Honours Specialization in Neuroscience from Western University. Jaymie will begin medical school at the University of Toronto, where she hopes to have a career that will help bridge the fields of healthcare and innovation. Jaymie is passionate about music and has been playing the piano since the age of 6.

    University of Ottawa

    Third year medical student at the University of Ottawa interested in the application of natural language processing and machine learning within healthcare to improve patient outcomes while reducing physician burnout. Outside of medicine, I love to spend my time hiking, competing in sports, and sampling the best local restaurants. I’m excited about the opportunity to promote physician-led innovations in Canada and to connect with individuals from across the country!

    University of British Columbia

    UBC medical student with a background in engineering specializing in mechatronic systems. In my engineering career, I designed and tested various systems such as waterpark attractions, industrial printers, and soccer-playing robots before joining the public healthcare sector as the Rehabilitation Technology Services Leader at Sunny Hill Health Centre where I was passionate about mindfully implementing technology to improve patient services. I decided to return to school to pursue the privilege of working directly with patients, and to continue being a champion of change.

I am very passionate about innovation in medicine, especially the use of AI and machine learning. I hope I can contribute to the growth of innovation in medicine to help physicians provide more efficient, and cost-effective care.

    Kai is a medical student at McGill University (class of 2025) with a passion for technology and digital health. Having worked on two mobile health apps, Kai has seen firsthand how technology can help to improve patient care and reduce healthcare costs. She believes that advancements in technology and digital health have the potential to transform patient care, particularly in light of the resource constraints faced by our healthcare system today.

    Rebecca is a third-year medical student at the University of Toronto. She completed her undergraduate studies in Neuroscience and Public Health at the prestigious private college, University of Rochester, in Upstate New York. Rebecca holds membership with several inter-collegial professional organizations in Canada to broaden her understanding of sectors such as artificial intelligence, business management, and health care entrepreneurship. She looks forward to contributing to the advancement of healthcare innovation and cutting edge research. Outside of medicine she is an avid runner, sports fan, and traveller.
